Great Canadian Entertainment to Launch a Multi-Million Vegas-Style Resort
Last update: May, 2024
The project, which will include a state-of-the-art casino, hotel, entertainment venue, and numerous eating outlets, will cost CAD 1 billion or approximately USD 724.9 million. However, Great Canadian Entertainment is yet to give an opening date. The resort will sit on 33 acres near the junction of Highway 401 and 427.
In a statement, GCE says the resort will include a contemporary Vegas-style casino, a 400-room hotel, and a 5,000-seat live entertainment venue. The resort will also have various on-site dining options, creating a new, one-of-a-kind entertainment district in Toronto. But until the resort opens, Great Canadian Entertainment will continue running the current Casino Woodbine. According to the company’s website, the new casino would house over 145 table games and more than 4,800 slot machines.
Matthew Anfinson, CEO at Great Canadian Entertainment, said, “We see this as an unprecedented opportunity to introduce an entirely new, world-class experience in Canada that will bring together the best in casino gaming, exceptional live entertainment, dining, and accommodation in one very special place.”
The official further noted that the company will reveal more information about this iconic destination’s features in the coming weeks. Anfinson remarked that the company would announce the opening date soon and that GCG is excited to complete this long-standing project.
Great Canadian Entertainment is a casino and entertainment company with branches in British Columbia, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Ontario.
Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation (MSIFN) Outrage
Just days after GCE announced their new project is ready to launch, MSIFN called GCE and OLG (Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation “disrespectful.” The First Nation expressed its disappointment that GCE is prepared to launch its new project in Toronto despite ongoing mediations.
MSIFN signed an agreement with the provincial authority in 2016 as part of the modernization scheme. The company owns Port Perry’s Great Blue Heron Casino. The accord guaranteed that the Great Blue Heron Casino would run similarly to existing government venues in the Greater Toronto Area.
Expressing her disappointment, MSIFN Chief, Kelly LaRocca, said that the government has once again acted without engaging MSIFN. She said this would significantly disadvantage the Great Blue Heron Casino at MSIFN.
“It’s utter disregard for our First Nation and the Honour of the Crown. We continue to focus our good faith efforts on the mediation and will brace for whatever comes next,” LaRocca added.
